Our first IPA brewed at IRBC. Boasting a strong malt backbone and bursting with flavour and aroma. We’re firm believers that an IPA, is an IPA, is an IPA. Unless the brew’s deviation is far outside the BJCP impression of an IPA, we do out best to avoid the noise of speciality IPA branding.
Often mistaken for the famed Sith Lord, this beer is an ode to the humble but mighty double handed hammer used to drive railway spikes. Unfortunately, an evening of too many of these may lead to a similar result.

The Spike Maul is our head brewer’s golden child, who can do no wrong in his eyes.
THE STYLE
American IPAs are generally more hoppy than English IPAs, with complementary floral and fruity notes (common for citrus flavours/aromas). IPAs usually celebrate the hops added to them and focus on them over malt flavours. Generally, IPA’s will have a higher ABV than a Pale Ale or other common styles of beer.
THE HISTORY
India Pale Ales became a well-known style in England by 1815 and was a popular beer to export to India. It is rumoured that was because IPAs could survive long voyages on the sea compared to other styles. IPAs fell out of popularity eventually until the 20th century when American brewers started brewing older styles of beer again. The IPA was well-suited for the intense flavours and aromas of American hops and once again gained popularity worldwide.
