THE STYLE
The Milkshake IPA is a spin on the Hazy IPA or the NEIPA, where lactose and fruit are added to create a creamy texture with tartness, sweetness or tropical tastes to the beer.
THE HISTORY
Milkshake IPAs are a relatively new beer with its beginnings dating back to 2015 with Omnipollo Brewing from Stockholm, Sweden. Omnipollo Brewing began adding fruit and complimentary hops to their New England-style IPA creating what they called Smoothie IPAs. From their Omnipollo partnered up with Jean Broillet IV of Tired Hand Brewing in Philadelphia, USA to really take this beer to the next level. They not only added oats to the grain bill but also added lactose, an un-fermentable sugar, and vanilla bean to the fermentation process. This gave the beer an extra sweetness and a smooth milky texture. They named it the Milkshake, and the style was born. Today it’s seen as a sub-style of the New England IPA or the Hazy IPA.
